The Mahurangi Montessori Primary Trust was set up by a group of parent volunteers in 2007 who wanted to extend the benefits of their children’s Montessori education from pre-school into primary school in the Mahurangi region.
Our first project was to establish a Montessori Unit at Matakana School in 2009. We enjoyed a 10 year tenure at Matakana school, then relocated to Pakiri School between 2019 and 2021. We are currently looking to support other local initiatives that support Montessori education in the region. Please get in touch!
Montessori is a style of teaching developed in 1907 by Maria Montessori, an Italian doctor. It’s based on her scientific findings, many of which have now been verified by modern research.
Walk into any Montessori classroom today, and you’ll see happy, relaxed, engaged children, thriving in a space where they’re free to do the things they enjoy. It’s an approach to education that values independence, hands-on learning, real-world application and problem-solving. Montessori teaching is highly personalised to the learning style and pace of each child, rather than being based on the average child.
